First Webinar: showing up for one
The other day I hosted my first webinar to share the current issues in psychosocial risk and I had one attendee.
I want to be clear: I am not owed a platform or audience and I only ever want my work to be sought out, be it educational or consulting, when the people I work with see value in their time, effort and resources being spent with me. This is not a whinge about attendance numbers or a proclamation of the importance of what I have to say.
This is a blog about the importance of showing up and being grateful to those who show up alongside you.
Toowoomba is a distinct and multi-layered community. You can be broadly connected on one layer and know hardly anyone on another. I have been very active at the University, in some allied health circles, in Queer community and in performing arts. I have established a positive reputation (at least I hope what I hear back is accurate) in these circles and I am used to a bit more ease with getting things done in those spaces. The key thing is this: I have not earned that rapport yet in the business community and I respect I have work to do to earn it. I am not entitled to anything that I haven’t worked for, and yet, I am being shown a lot of grace and I have noticed the many times I am granted the time and attention to engage with other business people. Those conversations are happening and I am being authentic and present.
I have also been shown generosity, with people offering time, wisdom, resources and encouragement. Building a place in the business community clearly doesn’t come from someone finding you through Google and emailing you for a contract, not as a consultant. It starts with showing up and letting the community get to know who you are and how you can help. It comes from letting them get to know you over time and see if your professional identity is consistent and trustworthy.
I am committed to showing up, whether it is for one person or a room full of people. And I am grateful for each and every person who shows up in return, while I let you all get to know who I am and what I am about.
If you would like to discuss how I can help your business with psychosocial risk compliance, diversity and psychosocial training or diverse hiring send me a message so we can set up a time to meet.
